Syntactics PINK’s Digital Poster Making Contest celebrating its seventh anniversary, now has winners as of last night, February 6, 2023, via Facebook.

Syntactics PINK is committed to empowering women in the tech industry to pursue their passions. Thus, Sync PINK has launched several events and ventures to provide women with the IT skills necessary for the industry.

One of Sync PINK’s latest initiatives is the Poster Making Contest celebrating its 7th anniversary. The contest’s theme, “DiverSyete: Increasing Diversity and Inclusion in the Tech Industry,” intended to “promote creativity and inclusion through innovation.”

Contest Mechanics

Digital art enthusiasts and amateur graphic designers in the Philippines sent in a total of 20 entries. The artists had to explain how their art empowers women in the IT industry within 100 words.

The digital posters were judged according to the following criteria:

  • Creativity;
  • Adherence to the theme;
  • Delivery and execution; and
  • Audience impact.

The first-place design would not only claim prizes but also have their work featured on Syntactics PINK’s websiteFacebook page, and merchandise for 2023 events.

Entries were accepted up until January 31, 2023. Then, they were posted to Syntactics PINK’s Facebook page, where people were encouraged to vote for their favorite design until 5 PM on February 6, 2023.

Winners were also chosen by a panel of judges delegated by the Sync PINK committee:

  • Stephanie Rosalind Caragos, President and CEO of Syntactics, Inc., and Syntactics PINK’s founder.
  • Jeraiza Molina, managing editor for WhatALife.ph, a Syntactics website, and Sync PINK organizer.
  • Christine Mae Salcedo-Royo, Syntactics, Inc.’s senior graphic designer.
  • Hannah Mae Alcantara, Sync PINK’s design lead.
  • Hazel Alegbeleye, program director for Syntactics PINK.

Scores were carefully tabulated, resulting in the following winners:

1st Place: Matthana Manales

1st Place Winner: Matthana Manales, syntactics pink, sync pink, diversyete, woman

Manales’ description of their work:

Too long have biased stereotypes and deprive the world of the creativity and inventiveness of half the population by denying women. Thinking a women’s imperfections would hinder them to overcome imperfections to create perfection. With this, a digital art that shows, women can also get involved and find themselves suited in any technological forms. The environment at work needs to be more accepting of different genders, colors, and interests. Otherwise, the talented individuals leave and the mediocre remain. Lakshmi Puri once said, “We must ensure that women’s participation in innovation is not the exception, but becomes the norm”

2nd Place: Arvin Lazado

2nd Place Winner: Arvin Lazado

Lazado’s description of their work:

In my work, the heroism of women can be seen here. We know that “bayanihan” is a Filipino word derived from the word “bayan” meaning town, nation, or community in general and is thus used to refer to a spirit of communal unity and cooperation. We can also notice in the pictures that usually the lifters are men and here in my work I want to empower women that they can be leaders and advocate as one community in tech and inspired other women that they can bring more a fresh approach and offer unique perspectives to meet challenges, solve problems, and design new products in technology. And now, we need to act now to build a strong confidence for women to take the world in the future of technology because women are the future of tech.

3rd Place: Herson Ocampo

3rd Place: Herson Ocampo, syntactics pink, sync pink, diversyete, woman

Ocampo’s description of their work:

My poster was made in celebration of the 7th anniversary of Syntactics PINK, hence the number 7 silhouette in the poster. Sticking to the theme, “DiverSyete: Increasing Diversity and Inclusion in the Tech Industry.” My poster shows the growing inclusivity in the tech industry. Below are three women: a transgender woman, a woman of color, and a Muslim woman. It also contains an arrow pointing above, insinuating the increase in the number of minorities observed in a field that was then dominated by men. This poster reminds women that they should be celebrated and that no label can stop them from being represented.

Congratulations, Winners of Sync PINK’s 7th Anniversary Poster Making Contest!

Again, the first-place design is set to be featured on Syntactics PINK’s website, Facebook page, website, and merchandise. In addition, winners will receive emails containing instructions on how to claim prizes.

Syntactics PINK launched a Digital Poster Making Contest on its seventh anniversary celebration last January 17, 2022, via their Facebook page!

Ever since its establishment seven years ago on January 17, 2016, Syntactics PINK has become a champion of women in IT. In particular, it’s committed to ensuring women feel empowered in their environment within the tech industry. Thus, they can pursue their dreams and passions. As a result, women can freely innovate and represent themselves in the industry.

As Sync PINK is celebrating its 7th anniversary, they’re holding a Digital Poster Making Contest. This year’s theme is “DiverSyete: Increasing Diversity and Inclusion in the Tech Industry.” The competition aims to “promote creativity and inclusion through innovation” and called on digital art enthusiasts and amateur graphic designers in the country to send in their entries.

Entries submitted for the contest should be a participant’s original digital artwork. As long as it’s in line with Syntactics PINK’s advocacy of representing, promoting, and empowering women in tech, the participants can be as creative or imaginative as they wish. The artists would also have to explain how their piece empowers women in IT in 100 words or less.

Participants were allowed to use any medium to showcase their digital art skills. These included digital tools like Canva. However, AI art was not allowed — its usage would defeat the purpose of the contest. In addition, mechanics disallowed offensive statements, making them grounds for automatic disqualification.

Entries for the Digital Poster Making Contest were accepted up until the deadline, January 31, 2023. After that, the top 20 entries were uploaded to Syntactics PINK’s Facebook for others to vote for the winning design. Also, a panel of judges, selected by the Syntactics PINK committee, are tasked with selecting winners.

The judging criteria are as follows:

  • Creativity – 40%
  • Adherence to the theme – 25%
  • Delivery and execution – 25%
  • Audience impact – 10%

Not only will winners get exciting prizes, but the first-place design will be featured on Sync PINK’s Facebook page, website, and merchandise for 2023 events.

Currently, interested parties can view the top entries on the Facebook page. But judging is ongoing until February 6, 2023. Winners will be announced via the organization’s Facebook page.

When advertising on Google Ads, adding keywords is an essential step. Google shows these ads easily through three keyword match types:

keyword match type summaries

However, just recently, Google Ads announced changes with two of its keyword match types, Phrase Match and Broad Match Modifier. From February 2021, phrase match will incorporate broad match modifier (BMM) behaviors to simplify keywords, making it easier for digital marketers to reach relevant audiences. This change is due to Google Ads’ decision to phase out support for broad match modifier. In fact, this recent announcement is the first phase of said change, with the second part commencing in July.

Let’s break down this transition on Google Ads Phrase Match:

Phrase match will now cover additional broad match modifier traffic but will continue to respect word order. This new matching behavior gives you more control in keyword management and better customer reach.

Now, phrase match reaches the search you want without worrying about the searches you don’t want. For instance, the phrase match keyword “digital marketing Philippines” that covers searches for “affordable digital marketing Philippines.” With the new update, this phrase match keyword will now also cover searches for “Philippines digital marketing agency.”

The existing BMM keywords will continue working under this new behavior, and users can still create them (until July) using the BMM notation (+keyword). However, since BMM and phrase match will behave the same way using quotation marks (“keywords”), it is therefore recommended to only create phrase match keywords onwards.

Note: Although BMM will cease in July 2021, existing BMM will continue working under this new behavior. Users can still edit the keyword text, but its match type will be automatically updated to phrase match.

On January 13, 12 PM Eastern Time, Google made its January 2020 Core Update on its search algorithm live. It’s worth noting that each update from this point on will be implemented on a global scale unless the major search engine specifically says otherwise. Therefore, it affects every search query across various languages and regions. Google also said that the update would then be brought to data centers shortly after.

Following this report, on January 16, Google SearchLiaison reported that the update may need two weeks before becoming fully complete. Since its release, the SEO community has labeled the update to be much bigger in comparison to its predecessor, the September 2019 Update. This is due to the latter being much less immediately noticeable when it was first launched.

The January 2020 Google Core Update’s Effects

Data providers with automated tracking tools have seen large fluctuations in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) rankings. For instance, here’s SEMrush’s report on each category’s volatility for both desktop and mobile search rankings as caused by the January 2020 Google Core Update:

volatility of mobile and desktop search results as caused by January 2020 Google Core Update

Source:  searchengineland.com

Additionally, SEMrush Data Analysts Yulia Ibragimova details that the news and sports categories were most volatile. The online communities, arts and entertainments, games, and finance categories then followed thereafter. However, she clarifies that “we can assume that this update wasn’t aimed to any particular topics.”

Multiple websites across various industries have been hit—causing drastic changes to their rankings. Stay up to date and check on your company’s and your clients’ sites to see how this affects you. However, Google highly recommends that you take a step back before you try to fix specific pages the January 2020 Update hit. It suggests, instead, that it’s much better to determine how you can improve your site as a whole instead. Wondering how you can do that ant more? Consult with SEO Experts in the Philippines now!

Facebook will remove gray verification badges from its Pages beginning October 30.

As of 2019’s second quarter, Facebook has become the home of 2.41 Billion monthly users. This audience has always relied on verification badges to identify whether Facebook pages were authentic. Additionally, viewers understood that having a badge displayed meant that the official company runs the page. There are two kinds of badges—the blue and the gray.

Being Verified: A Status Symbol

Having verification badges on any social media platform can be a huge advantage. Without a doubt, you have now proven that your page has exceeded a more than average amount of followers. It shows your potential customers that your business embodies competence, excellence, and trustworthiness.

facebook layout without gray verification badge

Facebook has always confirmed and verified public figures, media companies, and brands before by giving them blue badges. On the other hand, it only introduced the gray badges in 2015 to serve as a symbol  that a business or organization page is authentic.

Gray Verification Badge Removal From Facebook Pages

Facebook made a decision to remove the gray verification badges to address the feedback they received which said that its purpose was unclear. They also called the feature “more confusing than helpful” in their messages to the pages with gray verification badges.

Select individuals, entertainment, media, brands, and government Pages are pages eligible for blue badge verification. Facebook states that business Pages can prove their authenticity to their target market by using other techniques. You can do this by completing your profiles, including a profile picture and the right contact information, and adding up-to-date information.

Despite the removal of the gray verification badges, the change will not influence how you appear in Facebook’s search results. Instead, the social media giant urge Page owners and Social Media Marketing Experts to improve their Page visibility and follower engagement by following best practices found on its Facebook Business Ads Help Center.

October 12, 2019 — Syntactics CEO Stephanie Caragos and COO Wilfredo Kaamiño Jr. pass the Data Protection Officer Certification Exam 2019 given at the Malberry Suites Business Hotel

Last October 10 – 12, 2019, Syntactics, Inc.’s CEO Stephanie Caragos and COO Wilfredo Kaamiño attended the 3-day DPO Certification and Compliance Training on Data Privacy Act held at Malberry Suites in Cagayan De Oro City. The attendance of the company’s founders is part of the company’s mission to respect the clients’ data privacy, ensure that the company is updated with the policies, and to fulfill the company’s duties towards its clients.

The event, which took place at 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, had keynote speaker Mr. Damian Domingo O. Mapa, the former NPC Deputy Commissioner and one of the signatories of the IRR of the Data Privacy Act.

The 3-day event covered topics on:

  • Writing a Company Privacy Manual
  • Conducting a Risk Impact Assessment
  • Drafting data sharing and processing agreements, and
  • Designing data security measures.

On the last day, the IT company’s very own founders then received their Data Protection Officer certificates.

The DPO Accountability Compliance and Ethics Program

It was back in December 2018 when the National Privacy Commission unveiled the DPO Accountability Compliance and Ethics Program. The program aims to establish for local privacy professionals a skills benchmark to match the demand for data privacy training in the Philippines. The pilot training, also comprised of 3 days, happened last December 12 to 14, 2018. It took place at the Philippine International Convention Center in Manila. Many of the attendees were members of government offices and prominent corporations.

The program further emphasizes the importance of trust and caution in today’s digitally active world, one where data can be easily abused and misused.

A Rising Demand for Data Protection Officers

Data Privacy is also a need, especially for IT service providers such as Syntactics, who deal with tons of data entrusted by clients from all over the globe. In fact, any company that handles data from users and clients should have a data protection officer. These officers then become responsible for making sure that the company or organization complies with the Data Privacy Act. Part of the role of a DPO is also to understand and be aware of data being processed inside the organization.

Due to the demand for a Data Privacy Officer in various industries in the country, many institutions offer certification programs. It can also be expected that universities will eventually have formal courses in the near future.
